(8 Feb 2022) China on Tuesday again urged the U.S. to abide by the one-China policy after Washington approved a $100 million support contract with Taiwan. The support agreement is meant to help Taiwan maintain its existing air-defense missiles and advanced U.S.-made Patriot missiles that Taiwan is acquiring as it faces increasing pressure from China. Condemning the deal, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian demanded the U.S. "immediately revoke" the plan and sever military contacts with the democratically-ruled island. The State Department announced the engineering and maintenance agreement on Monday as China plays host to the 2022 Winter Olympics, an event filled with nationalist fervor that some fear could escalate after the Games into an attempt to take Taiwan by force. Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province, has not ruled out the use of force to unify the island with the mainland and has in recent months escalated fighter jet flights over Taiwanese airspace. Zhao also dismissed Britain's opposition to a statement from China that affirmed Beijing's support for Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss responded to the statement by tweeting that the United Kingdom "completely" rejected "any questions over sovereignty of the Falklands". But Zhao rejected Britain's position and called for a peaceful settlement on territorial disputes in accordance with the UN Charter. "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Britain should set an example in complying with the spirit of the UN Charter and UN resolutions," he said. Commenting on the negotiations on the Iran nuclear deal, Zhao said the talks were currently at a "crucial juncture." "All parties should enhance the sense of urgency, fully express goodwill and flexibility, and promote the conclusion of an agreement as soon as possible," he said. Iran and world powers including the U.S have been discussing the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal that saw Iran limiting its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. Zhao also urged Lithuania to "correct mistakes" and stop "ganging up with other countries to counter China". Lithuania broke with diplomatic custom last year by letting the Taiwanese office in Vilnius bear the name Taiwan, instead of Chinese Taipei, which most other countries use to avoid offending Beijing. Tensions have mounted, and Lithuania, together with the EU, accuse Beijing of holding up goods, both from the Baltic nation and from EU companies that use Lithuanian components, at China's borders.
