What actually happens to a dead body at the bottom of the ocean? Scientists sank a pig carcass nearly 1,000 feet into the deep sea to find out, and within just 8 hours, huge bluntnose sixgill sharks showed up and wrecked the entire experiment. See the footage. Shark scientist Kristian Parton breaks down this deep-sea forensic experiment from the Strait of Georgia, off the coast of Canada. Researchers Gail Anderson and Lynne Bell from Simon Fraser University used the VENUS underwater observatory to film pig carcasses 300 metres down, hoping to learn how bodies decompose underwater to help real forensic investigations. Instead, enormous six-gilled deep-water sharks devoured the first pig almost instantly. So the scientists came back with two pigs, one exposed and one protected inside a cage. The sixgill sharks returned, but this time something strange happened: they barely ate and lost interest within 48 hours. The real feeding frenzy came from a swarm of tiny amphipods so thick it coated both carcasses, may have driven the sharks away, and even appeared to drain the oxygen from the water around them. The biggest predators on camera weren't the most important scavengers after all. If you could drop another unexpected carcass on a deep-sea camera purely for science, which would you choose?
