In this video, I show the fuel filter replacement process and the important details to keep in mind when working on the fuel system. • In this case, we’re replacing the complete fuel filter housing together with the filter element already installed inside. Depending on the parts and configuration, there are two ways to service this system: replace only the filter element inside the housing or replace the complete filter housing assembly. • If you’re replacing only the filter element, the housing cover needs to be removed, the old filter taken out, the housing thoroughly cleaned and the new filter installed. • Replacing the complete housing is even quicker. The fuel line quick-connect fittings need to be disconnected, the mounting bolts removed, and the complete filter housing can then be taken out of the vehicle. • Cleanliness is extremely important when working with the fuel system. Once the fuel lines are disconnected, you don’t want dust, dirt or debris getting inside the fuel lines, so the open lines should be properly capped or protected. • However, one of the most important parts of the job is priming the fuel system after replacing the filter. The new filter is empty, which means air can enter the system and make the first engine start much more difficult. • In this case, I use a special tool that creates a vacuum and pulls fuel through the new filter, filling the fuel system before starting the engine. • Once the system has been properly filled with fuel, the engine can be started without excessive cranking.
