Joining us on this episode is Sven Fischer from Cottage & Castle (@melbourne_buyer_agent), and this part of the conversation stopped us both in our tracks. 70% of the 11 million homes in this country were built before energy efficiency standards existed. No insulation. No double glazing. Homes expected to cope with Melbourne winters that drop to zero and summers that push past 40 degrees, with nothing in the walls to help. Germany made insulation mandatory in the 1950s. Double glazing became a requirement there in the 1970s. Australia did not introduce meaningful energy efficiency standards until the early 2000s. Fifty years behind. And we are still catching up. At the time, double glazing in Germany was seen exactly the way it is seen here today, as a luxury add-on rather than a basic standard. That thinking eventually changed there. It has not changed here yet. This is not a comfort issue. It is a public health issue. We are presenting this research to the Boroondara Council and the Sustainable Build Alliance because the conversation needs to happen at every level, from individual homeowners right through to policy.
