Maria Sharapova lost a match in Cincinnati, and her physio told her: "You were soft when you had to be strong." On her podcast Pretty Tough, with Alex Eala as her guest, Maria Sharapova remembered coming off the court after a match in Cincinnati. She says she was up a break, served for the match and lost. The first thing her physio told her, not even her coach, was "You were soft when you had to be strong." It felt like someone put a dagger in her heart, because fight and being strong were her character. When she looked back at that match, she saw it: "I was passive. I didn't go for my first serve." Two second serves, waiting for her opponent to give it to her. She says he was 100% correct, and she needed to hear it before a Grand Slam. Sharapova does not name the year or the opponent, so this video doesn't either. Maria Sharapova's own words are from her Pretty Tough podcast (with Vox Media): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbt7QQd0TSc On-court footage: WTA highlights (Halep v Sharapova, Rome 2018), used as general footage of Sharapova, not the match she describes.
