Supergirl Review: Is the Screenplay Actually Good? | Save the Cat Structure SUPERGIRL! It’s tanking big-time at the US box office, with most reviews ranging from mid to downright scathing. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman was particularly vicious, calling it "super-horrendous" and criticizing the screenplay as"the worst script I can remember." Wow, that's a BAAAD script, Owen! But the worst you can remember? There have been plenty of terrible movies in recent years. Screenwriting is truly a lost art form, if recent movies are any indication. For every "Obsession," we seem to get three "The Marvels." Heck, just pick any of the most recent Marvel movies. They're all pretty terrible. Bad screenwriting and scrapbook-style moviemaking is the order of the day. One wonders if there are any competent screenwriters left in Hollywood. Although it may not be fair to blame the writers - often they're rewritten of course, or crucial scenes may be excised in the edit or shot down by the suits for myriad reasons. But for real, does Supergirl totally stink up the joint? How bad IS the script? Is it truly as unctuous as everyone says? Could *you* have written a better script than this? (Probably!) Jim and Tanya, the partners behind Coverage Ink, two professional screenplay analysts with decades’ experience, rip into the film from a writer’s point of view and dig into all the things that work - and the myriad things that do not. Plot holes, logic issues, inconsistent characterizations, predictability, and scenes that do not advance the story are all hallmarks of a weak screenplay. Yet the script does get some things right - structure, for one (mostly), a coherent storyline and clear(ish) motivations. To listen to some of these reviews, you’d think this is the worst movie in decades. Spoiler alert: it isn’t. But that doesn’t mean it’s good, or that the script was anywhere close to being ready to shoot -- or that it’s worth your money. If you're a screenwriter, you can definitely learn things from this movie - mostly, though, it's going to be what not to do. It always comes down to the script. If it’s not working on the page, it’s not going to work in the movie. This is a lesson James Gunn and Hollywood in general need to pay more heed to. As a wise man once said: it's the script, stupid! So: is it a total train wreck? Does it fly - or drop like a stone? Most importantly, is the script super - or will it lull you into a stupor? You might be surprised at our findings!
