The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season was pretty intense. It officially started on June 1 and wrapped up by November 30, though there were storms before and after those dates. It was an above-average season in terms of both the number of storms and their intensity, largely due to unusually warm sea surface temperatures and El Niño conditions that helped fuel the storms. In total, there were 21 named storms, which is quite a lot, and of those, 8 became hurricanes. Out of the hurricanes, 3 reached major status (Category 3 or higher). Some of the most memorable storms included Hurricane Idalia, which caused significant flooding in Florida and Georgia, and Hurricane Lee, which made headlines by impacting the Northeast U.S. and parts of Canada. The season also stood out because of the unpredictability of some storms. A few of them rapidly intensified, catching people off guard. On the flip side, the U.S. avoided direct hits from several major hurricanes, thanks to some lucky turns or weakening right before landfall. In terms of damage, while there were some devastating impacts in certain areas, the season wasn’t as catastrophic as some of the worst seasons we’ve seen, but it definitely left its mark, especially in parts of the Caribbean and along the U.S. Gulf and East Coasts. The aftermath also showed that while forecasting technology has gotten better, nature still manages to surprise us. Credits to music: Chill Synthwave, AllwaysGG
