This is a story about how companies make money from a fee most investors never see on a bill, told through Jack Bogle's The Little Book of Common Sense Investing (Wiley, 2007; tenth anniversary edition 2017). Two people put the same $10,000 into the same market for 50 years. One ends with about $294,600, the other with about $114,700. The only difference is 2 percent a year in costs. I'm Bilal, and in this episode I walk through the book's Gotrocks family parable, Bogle's all in cost math, the tyranny of compounding costs, the long run scoreboard of active funds, and then a real data test of $10,000 in a fund tracking the S&P 500 since April 2007, with today's typical fee gap and Bogle's own estimate. The 7 percent and 5 percent example is a hypothetical, worked out with plain arithmetic. 0:00 Two Investors, One Gap 1:39 The Man Behind the Book 3:18 The Gotrocks Family 5:25 Humble Arithmetic 7:35 Where the Two Percent Hides 10:29 The Tyranny of Compounding 13:31 The Real Data Test 16:58 The Scoreboard 19:40 How Fund Companies Make Money 22:37 What I Take From It Sources: John C.
