Heavy rain and flash flood warnings hit the Lake Powell region on October 21, 2026. Across northern Arizona and southern Utah, powerful storms threatened to turn normally dry desert washes into rushing streams. But how much water and sediment could these storms bring into Lake Powell? In this video, I follow the storm from Page, Arizona, to Lone Rock, Big Water, Utah, and Wahweap to investigate the flooding threat and its effects on the Colorado River system. At Lone Rock, Wahweap Creek has carved a massive channel through mud and sediment exposed by Lake Powell’s declining water levels. Heavy rainfall can erode these deposits, sending muddy water downstream toward the reservoir. But there’s a bigger problem. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Lake Powell lost approximately 1.83 million acre-feet of storage capacity between 1963 and 2018, largely because of sediment accumulation. That’s nearly 7% of its original storage capacity. As drought continues to affect the Colorado River Basin, storms can bring much-needed water. But they can also carry sand, mud, and sediment into the reservoir. Follow along as I document the October 2026 storms, explore the exposed lakebed at Lone Rock, check conditions along Wahweap Creek near Big Water, and return to Lake Powell to see what is happening. Exploring Lake Powell, Lake Mead, the Colorado River, drought, geology, Western history, and the changing American Southwest through real, on the ground footage.
