On a morning in October 2023 in Artesia, New Mexico, a routine custody handover outside the city's public safety complex turned into a tragedy. Mark Rommel, 43, lost his life in the parking lot after a confrontation with Acadio Lucero, 22, the new partner of his ex, Jahnika, who is the mother of his infant daughter. Acadio was hurt when a responding sergeant stepped in to stop him. Because an officer was involved, state detectives took over the case. One by one, the people close to Acadio (Jahnika, his brother and her cousin) told almost the same story: Mark was controlling, carried a blade and lunged first, so Acadio was only protecting himself. From his hospital bed, Acadio confidently said the same. The evidence didn't fit, though. No blade was ever found on Mark, and the spent casings moved toward where Mark fell rather than back toward Acadio's truck, which means Acadio was the one advancing. Bodycam footage taken minutes earlier showed Mark calm and worried about his daughter's welfare. His mother, Linda, then gave detectives audio recordings Mark had secretly made, in which Jahnika is heard making alarming threats against both Mark and the child. The sergeant who saw everything confirmed that the argument had only been verbal before Acadio calmly walked to his truck, came back armed and kept going without provocation. Acadio was charged with first-degree homicide, convicted by a jury the following June and sentenced to life with a chance of parole after 30 years.
