Down in the hills of southern Missouri, David Day has spent 30 years breeding some of the rankest bucking bulls in the PBR, and it started with a $430 bull out of a sale barn. He rode bulls himself until he was 32. When his body finally gave out and his kids wanted to rodeo, he got into the bucking bull business the hard way: buying anything at the sale barn that looked like it might buck. One year he ran 90-some head through the place trying to find a single one worth keeping. He found one. He'd paid $430 for him, called him Stone Cold, and sold him to Sammy Andrews for $10,000, which was huge money for a bucking bull in the 1990s. Then came Dagger. One horn up, one horn down, bought sight-unseen out of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and mean enough that he broke one rider's leg on a Friday and another rider's leg on Saturday. He was too dangerous to compete, but he became the foundation of everything. Josey Wales came from that line. So did Mississippi Hippie, a 2,300-pound freak of nature that David sold to Kenny McElroy. He called his wife from the road and told her to drive the stakes. They were building a new house. That house is still standing on the hill. In this feature, David walks us through the arena, the bull pens, and the bucking cows that all trace back to Josey Wales. He shows us the young bull he thinks might be the rankest he's ever raised, a bull that knocked his own teeth out as a calf and got crippled as a three-year-old. He talks honestly about the economics: ground that went for $240 an acre now bringing $3,000 to $4,000, Angus cows paying the bills, and the reality that most of these bulls will never see a PBR arena. You're feeding a whole pen hoping for the one that pays. And he shares the best piece of ranching advice we've heard in a while. Never buy a piece of equipment your wife can't run. You might not be there to run it. ā±ļø TIMECODES 0:00 - The Story Behind the 2D Brand 0:43 - Moving to a Run-Down Place in the Early 80s 1:05 - Getting Into the Bucking Bull Business 1:20 - Buying 90 Bulls to Find One That Bucked 1:45 - Stone Cold: From $430 to $10,000 2:15 - Dagger: One Horn Up, One Horn Down 2:45 - The Bull That Finally Clicked 3:10 - Where Mississippi Hippie Came From 3:34 - Josey Wales and the Foundation of the Program 4:00 - Selling Mississippi Hippie and Building the House 4:12 - Touring the Arena 4:45 - Who's Allowed to Ride These Bulls 5:20 - Rodeoing Until 32 and Knowing When to Quit 6:10 - "Don't Buy Equipment Your Wife Can't Run" 7:00 - There Are No Days Off on the Ranch 7:50 - The Rankest Bull He's Ever Raised 8:20 - The Bull That Knocked His Own Teeth Out 9:30 - What These Bulls Eat Every Day 9:45 - $240 an Acre Then, $4,000 Now 10:00 - Why This Is Good Cattle Country 10:10 - Black Buzzards and Predators 10:22 - Bulletproof and the Bull Pens 11:00 - What It Actually Costs to Haul Bulls 11:22 - Chasing the One Bull That Pays 12:00 - Dagger Breaks Two Riders' Legs in Two Nights 12:45 - When a Bull Is Too Mean to Compete 13:31 - Meet the Bucking Cows 13:50 - Hauling Bulls to Vegas, Detroit and Allentown 13:59 - The Time His Wife Got Trapped in a Tree Stand 14:33 - The Photos on the Wall 15:06 - Josey Wales, Mississippi Hippie and JB Mauney 15:40 - The Bobtail Cats 15:52 - The House on the Hill Check out our companies!
