However, it has a more destructive past and is the site of two massive eruptions that more or less made New Zealand's North Island uninhabitable after they occurred. The lake itself was formed during a supervolcanic eruption that is the most recent supervolcanic eruption to have occurred on our planet roughly 26,500 years ago. But the most eruption occurred a little under 2000 years ago and is what we are covering in part 1 of this video. Part 2 will cover the supervolcanic eruption that actually covered Lake Taupo, and I am thinking about diving into the older super volcanic eruptions that occurred and the actual Taupo Volcanic Complex in general with other parts that follow.
