You may also see the familiar glow plug warning light appear on the dashboard, which can often indicate a fault in the glow plug circuit. • That was exactly the problem with this 2010 Mercedes-Benz Vito, W639, equipped with the 2.1D OM646 diesel engine. • After carrying out diagnostics and testing the system, we found that one of the glow plugs had failed. In this case, the decision was made to replace the complete set of glow plugs rather than replacing only the failed one. • The glow plugs on this engine are not located in the easiest possible position. The engine is mounted longitudinally, so access is available, but the glow plug on cylinder number four is particularly difficult to reach. • Fortunately, the failed glow plug was on cylinder number one, located closest to the front of the vehicle and therefore offering the best access. However, even this plug did not come out easily - the thread had seized, so it had to be carefully worked loose. • After removing the glow plug, the thread also needed to be repaired. For this, I used an M10 × 1 tap together with plenty of lubricant.
