🚨Your driver's license may be one of the 153M just put up for sale on the dark web. 🚨 Know the second someone uses yours. 14 days free from my sponsor Aura: https://aura.com/thevillains On a quiet Sunday morning in March 2018, a security guard on patrol at an Albuquerque business park found a man lying lifeless behind a call center, his face covered with a white cloth and pennies placed over his eyes. Officers learned he had been struck by twelve rounds, and the guard pointed them to a strange blond man seen near the scene. Police found that man, Stephen, about a mile away with traces of the victim on his face and a spare magazine in his backpack, and at first he looked like the obvious suspect. In his interview, though, Stephen said he had simply come across the man already gone, tried to flag someone down, and covered his face and laid the pennies as an odd gesture of respect. His magazine didn’t match the casings at the scene and he gave a DNA sample willingly, so detectives cleared him. The medical examiner identified the victim as Ronnie Ross, a 50-year-old man without a home from the Navajo Nation town of Shiprock, and the extreme number of wounds pointed to a deliberate and excessive attack. Nearby CCTV showed a dark figure heading toward the spot, then two young men approaching later, followed by a flash. A witness reported two separate bursts of noise around half an hour apart, which suggested Ronnie had been attacked twice by people who came back to finish what they started. A painter found the weapon wrapped in a t-shirt a few streets away, but it was unregistered and its DNA matched nothing on file, so the case stalled until a worried mother told detectives her teenage son and his friends knew something. Those teens, Kameron and Kandice, explained that two uninvited acquaintances, 15-year-old Timothy Chavez and 17-year-old Anthony Gallegos, had come to Kandice’s 18th birthday gathering at a hotel. Hurt at being asked to leave, the two went out into the night, came back boasting, and left again together. The friends also handed over a Snapchat video of Anthony holding a weapon that visually matched the one recovered. Another friend, Shelby, said the pair had harmed someone else in Anthony’s neighborhood weeks earlier with a weapon taken from someone named Tino, and detectives linked that claim to an open case from March 2nd. Sean, the 16-year-old who knew the most, then described the chilling motive: Timothy had come back saying he had attacked a stranger, Anthony refused to believe him, and the two went back so Timothy could prove it, at which point Anthony finished the job. Detectives concluded the whole thing came down to bravado and bruised egos. Anthony, Timothy, and Tino were already in juvenile detention for the earlier incident, so getting DNA warrants was simple, and the results tied both boys to the weapon, which was itself linked to Ronnie’s case, the March 2nd incident, and a drive-by that same month. Both pleaded guilty by the end of 2022, and in 2023 Timothy received 13 years and Anthony 18, meaning two teenagers who acted out of wounded pride will be grown men by the time they’re released.
