Toy Story 5 is a touching story that reflects upon modern parenting and explores the evolution of children’s play in the digital age. The film’s heartwarming moments, comedic scenes, bits of nostalgia and nuanced message appeals to the younger generation and displays the positive effects of imaginative play. However, the main antagonist of the story, (the Lilypad,) feels underwhelming, lacking the development to become a compelling character. The storyline follows Jesse (Joan Cusack), a cowgirl toy whose owner, Bonnie (Scarlett Spears), an 8-year old kid, decides to stop playing with toys in order to “fit in.” Her parents buy her the new Lilypad (Greta Lee) tablet in hopes of making new friends in a generation that believes traditional play is outdated. With the help of Jesse (Joan Cusack), Buzz (Tim Allen), Woody (Tom Hanks) and the rest of the toys, they must face the consequences of new tech while helping Bonnie form tangible connections. The main cast are Jesse, Buzz, Woody, Lilypad, Smarty Pants (Conan O’Brien), Bonnie and Blaze (Mykal-Michelle Harris). Compared to the previous films in the franchise, Jesse’s character shines as the kind of toy who is willing to go the extra mile for Bonnie. Joan Cusack maintains a familiar, but fresh voice performance as Jesse and acts as a convincing leader who takes initiative in the face of conflict. Despite Woody’s usual role as the primary leader throughout the previous films, his presence does not overpower Jesse. Moreso, Buzz and Woody’s friendly banter contribute to the film’s comedic scenes, acting as complement to Jesse’s commanding presence. The film also features an army of “Hi-Tech Edition Buzz Lightyears,” whose side adventures are not only wildly comical, but contribute to the greater plot. The use of flashbacks which feature Jesse’s first owner, Emily, also adds emotional depth to her past, as she is a reminder of the bittersweet memories of love and neglect. In addition, the use of parallelism between Bonnie and Emily is heavily emphasized and adds continuity from Toy Story 2. Nevertheless, the movie’s weakness is in its main antagonist, the Lilypad, which lacks a compelling story. Even though the Lilypad is not as menacing as previous villains, she functions more as a psychological threat, which still culminates in a quick resolution. The film’s message is not solely limited to the idea that “tech is bad.” Instead, it shows that there is a world where technology and tradition can both coexist in the midst of changing times. Toy Story 5 gets 3.5 out of 5 stars from me and I recommend it for ages 8 to 12, plus adults.
