Stunning Visitor… After a very peaceful day of sunshine and amazing views, a stunning unbanded eagle suddenly popped into the nest just before sunset. The visitor took a quick look around, moved a few sticks, then headed out to the front porch. To this fully mature visitor, an empty nest with the best view in town is a perfect place to be. However, it is also very aware of its surroundings and knows it can be risky business if the owner suddenly decides to show up! As this beauty perched and scanned the area, its head quickly bobbed about. This head movement, called ā€œtriangulationā€, is a way for them to calculate distance and depth while tracking something. They are scoping out the area or mapping out their flight plan, perhaps measuring the distance to a potential branch or area before making the big leap. And since their eyes are locked into the sockets and cannot move side-to-side, an eagle cannot simply glance out of the corner of its eye to see what is happening around them, so their whole head moves. There was also a lot of head turning by this visitor. Due to the 14 vertebrae in their neck, an eagle is capable of rotating their head 180 degrees in either direction. This extreme neck flexibility is vital to survival and works hand-in-hand with triangulation. It allows an eagle to hold their body position still and swivel their head to scan for prey or look for threats to the side or behind them. It's amazing how all this works in perfect harmony! After flying out the back porch toward the Roost Tree at dusk, an eagle, likely the visitor, was spotted roosting on the left side of the tree next to the trunk. Perhaps this visitor is waiting to see if the owner will return to the nest or if a vacancy sign will be hung on that prime piece of property high atop the Jeffrey pine tree. Time will tell, so stay tuned!
