POSTURAL DETECTIVE CASE: THE BABY DID IT?! Masterclass on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/c/liferxhealth Book The Session https://massagerxla.com/ The Innocent-Looking Suspect Behind Mom & Dad's New Back Pain Yes—you heard me correctly. This Postural Detective case involves a baby. Of course, the baby isn't really a criminal. But after 20 years of working with people's bodies, I've noticed something interesting: becoming a parent can completely change the way a person stands, walks, sleeps, lifts, bends, sits, and carries weight. And eventually somebody walks into the clinic saying: "My lower back never hurt like this before." Or: "Since having the baby, my hip and SI area haven't felt right." Or Dad comes in holding his neck and shoulder because he's been carrying the baby on the same side every day. That's when the Postural Detective starts looking for clues. CLUE #1: PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH CHANGE THE BODY During pregnancy, the body adapts to a growing baby. The abdominal wall changes, the center of mass shifts, and the pelvis and surrounding tissues experience different mechanical demands. After delivery, everything doesn't instantly return to its previous condition. Some women experience pelvic-girdle or lower-back pain during the postpartum period. Recovery is different for every person and can depend on pregnancy, delivery, previous injuries, physical conditioning, pelvic-floor function, and many other factors. The important message is: Don't ignore your postpartum body. Assess it. Rebuild it. CLUE #2: THEN COMES THE BABY-CARRYING POSTURE Here's where our innocent little suspect enters the investigation. Imagine carrying a baby on your left hip. Five minutes becomes twenty. Twenty minutes becomes an hour. And you do it again tomorrow. Your pelvis shifts. One hip pushes outward. Your trunk leans to compensate. One shoulder changes position. Then you feed the baby while looking downward. You pick up the car seat. You bend over the crib. You sit in strange positions at 3:00 AM. You carry bags, bottles, strollers—and the baby. Suddenly your body has a completely new occupation: Professional Baby Carrier. And it didn't receive any training. CLUE #3: THE PROBLEM MAY TRAVEL UP THE BODY Repeated asymmetrical carrying and prolonged positions can place different demands on the: pelvis SI region hips abdominal wall lower back thoracic spine shoulders neck That's why the painful area isn't always where the investigation should end. If your neck hurts, I still want to see your pelvis. If your lower back hurts, I want to see how you're carrying the baby. If one shoulder constantly feels tight, I want to know which arm you use for feeding and carrying. That's what a Postural Detective does. We follow the movement clues. HOW CAN LIFERX HELP? At LifeRX Physio Massage, we look beyond the painful muscle. We can assess posture, hip mobility, breathing mechanics, movement patterns, muscle tension, and the way you're performing everyday activities. Manual therapy may be useful for reducing muscular tension and improving comfortable movement as part of a broader recovery plan. But massage alone isn't the entire answer. We also want the client to learn better movement habits. That may include gradually rebuilding: Core control. Pelvic-floor function. Hip strength. Glute strength. Thoracic mobility. Breathing mechanics. And most importantly: How you lift and carry your baby. Switch sides when appropriate. Bring the baby toward your body instead of constantly collapsing toward the baby. Avoid spending long periods hanging into one hip. And learn how to use your legs, hips, and trunk together when lifting. POSTPARTUM RECOVERY IS NOT A COMPETITION Every birth and recovery is different. Don't rush because somebody on social media was exercising two weeks after delivery. After an uncomplicated vaginal delivery, some people may gradually return to activity relatively soon, while recovery after a C-section or pregnancy/delivery complications may require a different timeline. Follow the guidance of your OB-GYN and, when appropriate, a pelvic-health physical therapist. Pain is information. Listen to it. THE POSTURAL DETECTIVE VERDICT So... Did the baby cause your back pain? Not exactly. But pregnancy, postpartum recovery, sleep deprivation, feeding positions, lifting, carrying, and repeating the same posture hundreds of times can create a completely different environment for your body. And that's the real case. The baby may look innocent... but we're still keeping an eye on that little suspect. đŸ‘¶đŸ” LifeRX Physio Massage Assessment. Manual therapy. Movement education. Move.
