Infused with plenty of “kawaii” spirit and pop psychedelia, these playful yet meticulously crafted islands of the sweetest materials speak to ideas of material abundance and dreamy nostalgia of youth. For her US debut installation, entitled ”Here Comes Sunshine”, Schultz combines hundreds of pounds of colored sugar, artificial flora, craft materials and found objects to explore her ongoing search for an earthly utopia. Schultz has always been fascinated with representations of paradise, illusion and wish-fulfillment described in folk tales, mythologies and cinema. “Here Comes Sunshine” makes reference to mythical lands of plenty such as Luilekkerland and the Land of Cockaigne, worlds made entirely of food, where you can have all that you desire, and more. Drawing wide inspiration from medieval maps, folk tales from around the world and legends of spirits residing within objects, these visions will be channeled into a color-saturated dreamscape which immerses the viewer into an optimistic parallel world.
