Nature has always been the smartest engineer. While modern buildings are rigid and unchanging, natural structures constantly adapt to heat, light, and movement. Inspired by this, scientists from Princeton University and Northwestern University have developed a new idea: buildings with “living” skins made from swarms of tiny robots. The researchers were frustrated that buildings are static boxes, unlike ants that link their bodies to form bridges that change shape. Using the concept of swarm intelligence—where simple units work together without a central controller—they created small modular robots called SGbots. Each SGbot has sensors, wireless communication, and a soft actuator that pulls a flexible plastic sheet, allowing it to open and close like a blooming flower. In real-world tests, the team attached SGbots to a sunny office window. When sunlight was strong, the robots worked together to block excess light. As sunlight faded, they folded back to let more light in. Even when some sensors failed, the system continued to function by following neighboring robots. In another experiment, a dancer interacted with the swarm in a gallery, turning architecture into a responsive creative partner. This research shows how future buildings could be adaptive, energy-efficient, and even expressive—more like living systems than static structures.
