Two patients, a lot of dry skin, and one case you won't want to miss. Taylor's presenting solo again. Katie's patient had been told there was no wax, but there's a big, dry blockage in the canal. Katie peels the dry wax away from the side of the canal first, then wiggles the block forward a little at a time with a curette. The eardrum underneath is clear and healthy. The other ear is a similar story, with wax squashed up against the canal wall. A little oil helps Katie get a grip, and the piece that comes out is much bigger than expected. Along the way, Taylor explains how to look after your ears and why an annual check is worth having. Taylor's patient has some of the clearest eardrums he has seen in a very long time, almost completely transparent. Once the dry skin is cleared, the patient still can't hear as well as they used to, and the reason is hidden behind the eardrum: middle ear effusion, fluid in the middle ear with negative pressure pulling the eardrum inwards around the malleus bone.
