I welcome you to a very special edition of Walking With Willie in the lovely little zsákfalu of Zengővárkony. . I was invited to this authentic Hungarian village in the south west of Hungary, right around the corner from Pécs, by a woman named Szilvia Fülöp. She wrote to me back when all of the Walking With Willie media articles were coming out and requested that I make a trip to stay in her family's guest house (http://www.rozmaringvendeghaz.hu/). I was interested, but I was also getting tons of similar invitations. But unlike many of the others, Szilvia kept on writing me every few months and asking me to come. Finally, she told me about a little festival going on at the beginning of October, called Lukács Nap. . I checked my calendar (ok, I don't actually keep a calendar, but I thought about my plans on October 9th), blank slate baby! . I told her of course I would love to come. A little village in Baranya Megye throwing a Búcsú with traditional, costumed folk dancers and performers from a place called the Sárköz? I'm there. . I figured plenty of pálinka must be involved in something like this, and that always is a bonus. Well, as it turns out, Szilvi and the rest of the Fülöps were some of the nicest people I ever met. As it turned out her husband Csabi is the mayor of there three hundred something person town. He also moonlights as chef at his local pizzeria, and apparently is an electrical engineer by trade. They had a 10 year old son named Lóri who was a local legend of sorts, and potentially the cutest child on the face of the earth, Zalan aka Zazi. . I couldn't have asked for better hosts, but really the Fülöpök were just an extension of their hometown: Zengővárkony. . You know, I've been to the Busójárás at Mohács, that famous scaring away winter festival in February, and while it was great in its own right, if I had to choose where I would go back for round 2, it would be Lukács Nap in Zengővárkony every single time. . The day was a special one, filled with folk dancing, new friendships, way to much Pálinka (as well as an assortment of other drinks that I have no desire to recollect right now) and a special taste of Hungarian tradition. . I began this channel as a way to explore culture and truly dive into the energy of the past. But I dive in the past not to live in a false reality, I dive in to the past in order to better understand our own times. And I've seldom emerged from one of my submersions with more energy from our present tense, than I did when leaving Zengővárkony. . . . .
