Favianna Rodriguez at UCSB Part 1 of 3 Activist, print maker, and teacher Favianna Rodriguez gave a riveting artist talk on January 30, 2014 at the Pacific View Room (Davidson Library). In conjunction with her art exhibit currently on view in the first floor gallery at Davidson Library, "Favianna Rodriguez: Art of the Activist Imagination," Rodriguez's talk like her artwork relays to viewers a sense of urgency to speak out against climate crisis, violence against women's bodies, and to conceptualize the migration of people as natural or necessary to survive. Rodiguez's political print posters are adorned with bright colors, bold slogans, and beautiful images of people of color. Her visit to UCSB was made possible through a collaborate effort that involved the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, Chicano Studies Institute, Davidson Library's California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, and the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts. In a full, standing room only room of racially and ethnically diverse staff, faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, Favianna Rodriguez spoke about her process as an artist and emphasized the important role that cultural producers have in influencing politics. She believes that artists are essential to struggles for justice and peace. Rodriguez made the case that artists are in a unique position to shape culture and popular representations. For instance, in honor of the International Day of the Woman, Rodriguez created a successful series of posters labeled "Slut Power" that quickly found itself various social media sites. One of the posters read, "I'm a slut. I vote. Keep Ur government off my pussy." These short and concise sentences speak volumes about women's empowerment and swiftly get right to the point, an advantage of the poster medium she often works with. Her most recent work highlighted in the documentary series "Migration is Beautiful" focuses on the humanity behind anti-immigrant sentiment and conservative policies. A symbol that appears recurrently in Rodriguez's latest series of posters, street art and live installations is that of the monarch butterfly. The monarch is known for its ability to migrate great distance for survival without regard to international borders. Rodriguez reminds us that there is power in sharing stories of inequality because we learn we are not alone in our struggle. If people are looking for a monochromatic and safe aesthetic, look the other way. Through her art, documentary and speech, Favianna Rodriguez aims to incite social change. Sara Hinojos
