Her name is Daisy. She was built in 1943 at the Douglas plant in Long Beach, California, not as an airliner but as a C-47A Skytrain, and she went to the US Army Air Forces as serial 30732. In February 1944 she was sent to England. On the morning of 6 June 1944 she flew over Normandy and eighteen paratroopers jumped out of her into the dark. Two of them did not come home. Then she came back, and she became an airliner. She flew for the Norwegian airline DNL as Nordfugl, then for SAS as Fridjof Viking, right at the birth of Scandinavian Airlines. Then Linjeflyg on Swedish domestic routes from 1957. Then the Swedish Air Force from 1969. In 1975 she carried 325 tonnes of aid to people starving in Ethiopia. And in 1983, when she had nothing left to do, a group of Swedes formed a foundation to save her, and she has been flying with Flygande Veteraner ever since. She is eighty three years old and she still flies passengers. I went to Västerås and flew on her across the Baltic Sea to Turku in Finland. Proper flight attendant, proper cabin service, curtains instead of window blinds, cruising at 1,500 feet at 125 knots, and a low pass over Stockholm Arlanda on the way. It is the closest thing to time travel I have ever experienced. And you can do it too. You join Flygande Veteraner, you wait three months because the Swedish Transport Agency says so, and then you book a day trip. It is a non profit run by volunteers with no sponsors, funded entirely by members and donations, and keeping her airworthy is brutally expensive. They recently had to replace a perfectly working cockpit voice recorder, at a cost of tens of thousands of euros, purely because the old one did not record for long enough. Planes like this do not fly because they have to.
