What if the best way to create a beautiful, low-maintenance garden is to start paying attention to the site and pick plants that want to live there? In this video, I’m sharing my first naturalistic planting trial garden at Sugar Hill in Kentucky, where I’m experimenting with native plants, plant communities, naturalistic garden design, and low-maintenance gardening. The garden is located in Kentucky’s Bluegrass region, with challenging clay soil, limestone, hot summers, and periods of drought. Rather than constantly amending the soil and trying to make plants grow where they don’t naturally thrive, I’m taking a different approach: understanding the site first, then choosing plants that are suited to those conditions. I’ll walk you through the plants I’ve selected, how I’m thinking about combining plants with different root systems, and why planting densely can help create a ground layer that suppresses weeds and reduces maintenance over time. I’ll also share some of the lessons I learned from my previous trial garden at Rabbit Run and explain how those experiences are influencing this new garden at Sugar Hill. 🌱 Plants Featured in the video include: • Prairie dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis 'Tara') • Rudbeckia subtomentosa ‘Henry Eilers’ • Mountain mint (Pycnanthemum muticum) • Amsonia x hybrida ‘Blue Ice’ • Allium ‘Summer Beauty’ • Calamintha nepeta ssp. nepeta • Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' • Autumn moor grass (Sesleria autumnalis) I created a PDF of the entire plant list for my newsletter which is linked below. It is included in Field Notes No. 11. I added a link to the top of the newsletter for convenience. https://gardenmoxie.kit.com/posts/field-notes-no-11-learning-naturalistic-planting This small garden is an experiment in naturalistic gardening. I'm trying to learn what wants to grow and observing how plants interact. Most importantly, I am sharing photos throughout the entire process, not just when the plants look perfect. I think that will allow us to understand how the plants will look throughout the entire growing season. If you're interested in naturalistic planting, native plants, ecological gardening, low-maintenance perennial gardens, garden design, Kentucky gardening, clay soil gardening, or creating plant communities, I hope you'll follow along as this trial garden develops. 📚 Books mentioned in the video include: Planting in a Post-Wild World by Rainer and West The Know Maintenance Perennial Garden by Roy Diblik 🌿 Subscribe to follow the progress of the Sugar Hill trial garden and see what I learn along the way. #gardeningtips #gardendesign #gardening #zone6a #NaturalisticGardening #NativePlants #GardenDesign #LowMaintenanceGarden #KentuckyGardening #NaturalisticPlanting #PerennialGarden #EcologicalGardening #ClaySoil #PlantCommunities 🌿 Website: https://gardenmoxie.com/ 🌿 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gardenmoxie/ 🌿 Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/GardenMoxie/ 📩 [email protected]
