Receptor control of growth factor availability: implications for therapeutic strategies for cancer Animals use a conserved and relatively small set of signaling pathways to generate diversity. Thus, distinct biological outcomes are a consequence of integration of these signaling pathways. The research in my lab is aimed at understanding these signaling pathways as changes in their availability contribute to disease, particularly cancer. The pathways I will focus on are the Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β) (an archetype of secreted growth factors) and Wnt, both of which utilize a set of cell surface receptors and proteoglycan co-receptors to transduce their signals. Our recent findings reveal that the availability of these secreted factors is tightly controlled, particularly by proteoglycan co-receptors at the surface, alterations to which disrupt homeostatic balance. These and related findings will be presented. I will also give an overview of the research going on in our department, highlighting research opportunities for chemistry, biochemistry and biology majors.
