A brand new shark tagging technique is about to change shark science forever. In the cold waters of Nova Scotia, now an exploding hotspot for great white sharks, scientists can tag a 4-metre white shark in a fraction of a second without ever hooking it. Join shark scientist Kristian Parton as he breaks down Dr. Neil Hammerschlag's pneumatic air-gun tagging method, otherwise known as the "shark sniper." For decades, tagging a white shark meant a long, exhausting battle on a hook and line, pushing the shark into severe capture stress that could skew the very data scientists were trying to collect. Kristian explains why white sharks are pushing north as the Northwest Atlantic warms and grey seal populations boom, what happens inside a shark's body during traditional tagging, and how Neil Hammerschlag and Maggie McKenna adapted a whale tagging system to fire satellite tags straight onto a free-swimming shark's dorsal fin. In their new research, none of the six tagged sharks showed signs of stress, and the method finally lets researchers tag the largest, most cautious adults too.
