After defeating the Ottomans and restoring the Safavid Empire’s borders, Nader Shah stood as the undisputed master of Iran. This video explores how he transformed military dominance into absolute political power through the Mughan Qurultai of 1736, where he secured unanimous support to become Shah while dismantling the Safavid dynasty. But Nader’s ambitions went far beyond the throne. He introduced radical religious reforms, attempting to bridge the divide between Sunni and Shia Islam and gain recognition from the Ottoman Empire. With his authority secured, Nader turned east toward the wealthy Mughal Empire. His campaign began with the brutal siege of Kandahar, followed by a lightning advance through Afghanistan into India. The decisive Battle of Karnal in 1739 demonstrated the superiority of his disciplined, firearm-based army over the massive but poorly coordinated Mughal forces. The campaign culminated in the sack of Delhi, where immense wealth—including the Peacock Throne—was seized, cementing Nader Shah’s reputation as one of history’s greatest conquerors. However, beneath this triumph lay the seeds of future instability and decline.
