The man who invented the telephone wanted you to pick it up and say "ahoy". Hello is older than the phone: it was a shout, the "hallo!" you called across a river to the ferryman. In 1877 Thomas Edison wrote that phones wouldn't need a call bell at all: shout "Hello!" into one, and the person at the other end hears it from 10 to 20 feet away. So hello started out as the ringtone. It won, and travelled: allô in France, alô in Brazil, алло in Russia, a lô in Vietnam. But some countries never took it. Japan says moshi moshi ("I say, I say"), Korea yeoboseyo ("look here"), Greece embrós ("forward"), Italy pronto ("ready"), Spain ¿diga? ("tell me"), and Germans traditionally pick up and say their own last name. So how do you answer? Ahoy? 👇 Sources: Bell's "ahoy" and Edison's "hello" (1877) — https://www.hagley.org/research/news/hagley-vault/date-1877-inventor-thomas-edison-suggested-hello-president Ahoy — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahoy Hello: from a shout to the telephone; Edison's letter of 15 August 1877 ("Hello!" heard 10 to 20 feet away) — https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello Hallo: the call to the ferryman — https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallo Allô, from English hello; the phone word in other languages — https://fr.wiktionary.org/wiki/all%C3%B4 Алло — https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%BB%D0%BE Moshi moshi (from 申し, "I say") — https://gogen-yurai.jp/moshimoshi/ Yeoboseyo (yeogi "here" + boda "look") — https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%EC%97%AC%EB%B3%B4%EC%84%B8%EC%9A%94 Pronto ("ready") — https://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/pronto/ ¿Diga? / ¿Dígame? in Spain — https://www.thelocal.es/20231212/how-to-answer-the-phone-in-spanish-in-spain Germans answer with their surname — https://www.make-it-in.rlp.de/en/work/environment/typically-german Pictures: Alexander Graham Bell at the opening of the New York–Chicago line, 1892, and Thomas Edison, c. 1877–78 (Levin C.
