The NBA is planning to put MICROCHIPS inside basketballs, and according to Adam Silver, we could see them in official NBA games as early as 2027. The NBA is working with Wilson on something called a Smart Basketball, which contains a tiny Bluetooth sensor built into the ball's air valve, weighing about ONE gram. The purpose of this chip is to detect when the basketball is touched, which could help referees make more accurate out-of-bounds, goaltending, and basket interference calls. However, referees would still need replay footage to determine WHO actually touched the ball. The technology could eventually introduce new advanced stats, like tracking the spin on three-pointers, the arc of a shot, or how quickly a player releases the basketball. Interestingly, the NBA actually experimented with this technology back in 2019, but those original sensors were too heavy and created an additional dead spot inside the basketball, affecting how it bounced. Players noticed the difference, and the NBA eventually abandoned that version. However, the newer smart basketballs were AB tested in 58 Summer League games in 2025, with around 550 player surveys and ZERO reported complaints about how the basketball felt. Some fans are concerned about electronics affecting the basketball's bounce, while others are bringing up conspiracy theories about magnetic basketballs being used to rig games, or be hacked although there's no evidence supporting that. I totally get the concern, at the very least of what this could one day turn into, even if right now there is nothing malicious. For now, the technology is still experimental, but Adam Silver believes it could arrive in official NBA games sometime in 2027.
