Utopia vs. dystopia transcript: What do they mean? A utopia is an imagined place where everything is perfect. It is like living in paradise or heaven. A dystopia is an imagined state or society with much suffering and injustice, typically in a totalitarian or post-apocalyptic world. Thomas More wrote in his 1516 novel Utopia about an ideal society set on a fictional island. Unlike utopias, dystopias show us the true consequence of our actions by displaying the dangerous effects of society's political and social structures. Similarities and themes Both utopias and dystopias share characteristics of science fiction and fantasy, and they are usually set in the future in which technology is used to make better living conditions. Both are often very political, and there are central themes they both come under. For the script or novel to be categorised as dystopian, they need to include these topics: Government control - The government has complete control over how the society they are running should live, meaning they can force people to view ideas differently (e.g. religion, race, class etc.). Corruption and dictatorship are prime examples of government control. Environment destruction Environment destruction presents stories of post-apocalyptic societies where ecological problems are happening, such as climate change, deforestation and extinction of species. Technological control Technological control is when robots, computers, artificial intelligence or other scientific means control society. At times, technology can be used to help us for the better or can be used against us to create fear and force (violence). Survival Survival in dystopia usually has stories of characters trying to fight against their oppressive conditions. They resort to extreme measures to protect themselves and others around them, even if it means they must rebel against the higher powers. They could be surviving war, famine or drought. Loss of individualism In this dystopian society, the citizens have been stripped of their basic freedoms due to the authoritarian government's oppressive policies. Factors such as identity, gender, religion, and race are integral to our being. As well as distinguishing the topics of what a dystopian story contains, there are also four types of utopians: The Paradise Living elsewhere can be the key to a happier life, often called paradise. The externally altered world An externally altered world is a new life made possible by unlocking nature, meaning the world could be better. The willed transformation Human effort can also achieve a new kind of life, known as the willed transformation. The technological transformation A new life can be made possible by discovering new technologies to help society change, calling for technological transformation.
