Flash flooding swept through downtown Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday, October 4, 2026, as more than three inches of rain overwhelmed streets across the historic peninsula. Cars became stranded, roads were closed, and emergency crews responded to multiple submerged vehicles as water continued rising through the evening. Charleston recorded 3.64 inches of rain on the peninsula, breaking the previous daily record of 2.51 inches set in 1893. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for downtown Charleston and Berkeley County, while city officials urged residents and visitors not to drive through flooded streets. The flooding was especially serious around the Medical District, where water reached knee-deep levels near major streets and hospitals. Charleston firefighters responded to nine submerged vehicles and deployed high-water vehicles to reach stranded drivers. But the threat did not end when the rain stopped. A high tide was expected early Monday, while another coastal storm was developing offshore. Strong winds and higher water levels could worsen tidal flooding by limiting how quickly rainwater drains from the low-lying peninsula. In this video, we examine Charleston's record-breaking rainfall, the flash flooding across downtown, the emergency response, and the coastal storm that could bring another round of tidal flooding. Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
