Heavy rain and flooding struck southern France on September 30, 2026, as an intense Cévenol storm stalled over the region and sent torrential rainfall from the Cévennes mountains toward Montpellier, Nîmes and surrounding communities. The Gard and Hérault departments were placed under France’s highest red warning as rivers rapidly rose. In Montpellier, rainfall reached up to four inches an hour, flooding low-lying streets and the city’s regional cancer institute. The Lez River surged dramatically, spilling into neighborhoods and threatening communities downstream toward Lattes, where around 60 homes were evacuated. Firefighters also rescued residents and animals as floodwaters rose. The flooding disrupted transportation across the region, with roads closed, rail services suspended and schools shut across parts of the Gard and Hérault. Lightning also injured a teenager in Saint Aunès. In this video, we follow the flooding from Montpellier and the Lez River to evacuations in Lattes, transportation shutdowns, and the continuing flood threat along the Vidourle and Vistre. We also explain the Cévenol weather pattern and how unusually warm Mediterranean waters helped fuel the storm. Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
