USGS Update (October 28): The Halema'uma'u eruption of Kīlauea remains paused following episode 55 on October 17. The forecast for episode 56 fountaining has been pushed to Nov. 1-7, 2026. Overview The summit eruption of Kīlauea in Halemaʻumaʻu remains paused following episode 55 fountaining on October 17, 2026. Slow, steady inflation continues at the summit. Based on current deformation trends and assuming magma chamber inflation follows similar patterns to those established during previous episodes, the forecast window for episode 56 fountaining is November 1–7, 2026. Summit Observations Intermittent strong glow was seen from the west vent overnight, with weaker but relatively steady glow from the north vent. The south vent remains dark after being buried by tephra during episode 55. Seismic tremor continued throughout the past day, with relatively steady background amplitudes interrupted by occasional stronger pulses. These fluctuations are characteristic of the pauses between fountaining episodes, with pulses typically associated with increased glow and gas emissions. Two earthquakes less than M1.5 were recorded at Kīlauea summit in the last 24 hours. Summit tiltmeters have recorded an overall positive trend since the end of episode 55, with several small, short-term oscillations. The general pattern remains consistent with post-fountaining recovery observed during previous inter-episode pauses, although rate of recovery has varied over time. The Uēkahuna tiltmeter (UWD) has recorded an increase of approximately 1.1 microradians in the past 24 hours for a total of 14.5 microradians of tilt recovered since the end of episode 55. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emission rates during inter-episode pauses typically range from 1,000 to 5,000 tonnes per day. Southerly winds are expected to transport volcanic gases north toward Volcano and surrounding communities. ---- Kilauea Volcano Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6JwXj19JyVCMG3qlgFBjBtH7Ut25_Q1q Kilauea Volcano Archives (Members-only): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6JwXj19JyVCi8iGZfRuAkV4wNLkWf6h_ ---- Other AfarTV livestreams of Kilauea: For our comprehensive multi-cam livestream of Kilauea or for a fullscreen of Cam J, visit the AfarTV channel LIVE page: https://www.youtube.com/@afartv/streams ---- You can help monitor earthquakes!
