How strong is the strongest magnet humans have ever built, and how does it compare with the strongest magnet in the universe? The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Florida operates a 45 tesla hybrid magnet, long recognized as the world's strongest continuous-field magnet. It combines a superconducting magnet with a resistive one, weighs about 35 tons, draws roughly 30 megawatts of power and needs about 4,000 gallons of cooling water per minute to keep from overheating. A typical hospital MRI machine runs at 2 to 3 tesla. A magnetar is a different scale entirely. It's a neutron star, the collapsed core left behind when a massive star dies, packing more than the mass of the Sun into a sphere only about 20 kilometres across. Its magnetic field can reach 10^14 to 10^15 gauss, up to 100 billion tesla, roughly 2 billion times the field of the lab's strongest magnet. It needs no power supply and no cooling system. At that strength, magnetism stops being a force that attracts metal and begins to distort the electron clouds of atoms themselves. According to NASA, if a magnetar flew past Earth at half the Moon's distance, its field would wipe every credit card on the planet. Within about 600 miles, it would rip apart the atoms inside a human body. Fortunately, none are anywhere near us. The closest known magnetar, XTE J1810-197, is about 8,100 light years away, based on a parallax measurement. Source: National MagLab, Meet the 45 Tesla Hybrid Magnet.
