Back on the Panzer II. The boys rebuilt the hull of our Panzer II Ausf. c from its original blown-up pieces back in April, and to keep momentum on our next flagship project we’ve brought in our mate Garth one day a week. He’s winding back his own fabrication business and we’re stoked to have him. Give him a warm welcome in the comments. First job: a Panzer II turret that’s had a very hard life. It looks to have taken an artillery round through the roof, and like most German armour, the hard plate didn’t peel or bend. It cracked and shattered. The corrosion is aggressive too, so the whole thing is coming apart to be repaired, sandblasted and primed. There’s just one catch. It’s the wrong turret. This one has the round cupola of the later Ausf. C (uppercase), while our early Ausf. c (lowercase) used a turret with a rectangular two-door hatch. So why fix it now? It’ll go on a future Ausf. C project, and in the meantime it’s the perfect original reference for assembling the Ausf. c turret parts we do have. It’s also a rare survivor: most Panzer II turrets around today are fortress turrets, often missing the right-side hatch and with their extra front armour welded on. Turrets that were actually fitted to vehicles always have that right-side hatch. Then it’s heat, penetrating spray, wedges, oxy, an air hammer and a lot of persuasion to get the mantlet, the 2 cm gun mounts and the armour plates off. Including one nut that refused to quit, and a reminder that sometimes Kurt likes to rush ahead. šŸ“ŗ Rebuilding the Panzer II hull from blown-up pieces: https://youtu.be/z5kliPlPx4o šŸ“ŗ Full Panzer II restoration playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWYZuCQ-NHUM2-JSzXcFraZBM9Io6NrL1 šŸŽŸļø AusArmourfest 2027 tickets are LIVE!
