A playthrough of Capcom's 1997 platformer for the Sony PlayStation, Mega Man 8. For the final formal entry in the original series before an eleven year hiatus, Mega Man 8 leaves a lot of mixed feelings. It was his first (native) outing in 32-bit, and the game looks and sounds great. We'll, besides the hammy voice acting, but remember that this was 90s Capcom, and Resident Evil was a recent game when this was released. Thank God there are no lines that liken being squashed into a sandwich in this one. The soundtrack is pretty good, and keeps with the softer tone of Mega Man 7 rather than the wailing synth rock of the X series. The graphics still look great with some amazing examples of pixel art that you didn't see often on the PlayStation, given that nearly all of its games used polygons. The sprites have also been mercifully shrunk down from their SNES MM7 counterparts. It's much easier to avoid fire with the smaller hitboxes, that's for sure, but now the game feels a bit on the easy side. Still, that didn't prevent me from having some really close calls. The cutscenes are all well-animated anime pieces, and even though the dubbing is wretched, it's pretty funny because of it. I'm not sure what the common opinion is of MM7 and MM8 with their hyper-cute anime styles, but I do know that they are my least favorite in the original series. They're good games, but the style went a bit off target for the Mega Man aesthetic in my mind. I played this a lot when it was new, but when X4 came out maybe six months later, I put Mega Man 8 down and didn't touch it again for years. ____ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
