MORE INTERVIEWS TOEFL Home Edition - Shiray’s Experience: https://youtu.be/89XpuIiQ2gU TOEFL Home Edition - Matías’ Story: https://youtu.be/rYtknGUt1iU 1) What are you doing and where are you from? I am from Costa Rica. I live in a small town located near San José. Right now I am preparing applications for different Masters. The TOEFL is a requirement for these Masters. 2) What was your TOEFL Home experience like? My experience was a good one, however, I faced different issues. While I was doing my writing part, the proctor started using my mouse. Thus, I lost valuable time to review and edit my essay. 3) What was the interaction with the proctor like? It was a normal interaction. You cannot see the proctor, however, he is able to see you the whole time. The proctor was a kind person. When I faced a problem with the camera, he helped me to solve the issue and did not cancel my TOEFL test. 4) Could you talk to your proctor? In the beginning of the exam I was able to talk to him. However, after we had started the first section of the TOEFL I could not write messages in the chat box. 5) Note-taking: David’s advice for you - Don’t miss it :) I used a transparency sheet with a marker. Guys, it is so important to get used to erasing your notes. That is why you should practice erasing before taking the TOEFL. You may have a bad experience if you do not practice. 6) How did you prepare to get a high TOEFL score? I prepared myself quite hard. I studied a lot, at least 8 to 9 hours every day. I started from a really basic level in English as a whole, not just regarding the TOEFL. When I felt that I was able to take the TOEFL I downloaded the ETS software and I got some books to practice because I wanted to get a real experience of what the TOEFL is going to be like. That is a good way of preparing for the TOEFL. Practicing is key! 7) Which TOEFL task was the easiest for you? For me the easiest task was TOEFL Reading because I am used to reading papers and books in English. That helped me a lot. Also, I once took an English Reading Strategies course at the university. Therefore, I knew how to skim the text and I knew all of those techniques you need to approach these kinds of tests. 8) What’s your advice for TOEFL Reading? From my point of view it is quite important to know the kind of questions that you will have to solve in the TOEFL and to practice them. Once you start practicing using tests you learn how to solve these questions. 9) Was there a TOEFL task that you found really hard? There was no task that I found really, really hard. The most challenging part for me was TOEFL Writing. You need to know a lot of words so that you are able to paraphrase whatever comes up in the questions. However, studying hard and using TOEFL templates will make the task easier for you. 10) How did you feel after the TOEFL? I felt quite good because I had been preparing my TOEFL for a long time (4 months). When I finished the TOEFL test and saw my unofficial scores for TOEFL Reading and Listening I was quite happy because I had scored over 25 in both. Also, I felt that I had done a good job in TOEFL Speaking and Writing. 11) How long did you have to wait for your TOEFL scores? I waited for about 9 days. I was thrilled when I saw my scores because I got a TOEFL score over 100. It was such a rewarding experience after a lot of work.
