š„ Jaw pain or tightness deep inside your mouth? The medial pterygoid may be contributing! One muscle that often gets overlooked when addressing jaw pain, stiffness, and difficulty opening the mouth is the medial pterygoid. This muscle sits deep along the inside of your lower jaw and plays an important role in chewing and jaw control. š” Why does this muscle matter? ā” The medial pterygoid helps close your jaw and stabilize it during chewing and clenching. ā” When it becomes tense or sensitive, it can contribute to jaw discomfort, restricted opening, and irritation around the TMJ. ā” Because it's located deep inside the jaw, accessing it requires a different approach than releasing muscles on the outside of your face. š ļø Release shown: Medial pterygoid ā STEP 1: Locate the muscle With a gloved finger, follow the inside of the lower back teeth toward the soft tissue behind the last molar. ā STEP 2: Release upward + downward Apply gentle, controlled pressure and slowly glide upward toward the upper molars, then back downward along the inner jaw. ā STEP 3: Work deeper along the inner jaw Follow the soft tissue downward behind the lower molars, tracing the inside of the jaw where the medial pterygoid attaches. š„ Why this matters: When the deeper jaw muscles become sensitive or overworked, simply massaging the outside of your face may not address every contributing area. The goal isn't just to release surface-level jaw tensionāit's to address the deeper muscles involved in jaw movement and control. Because this area can be sensitive, being gentle and easing into it is advised. #TMJ #JawPain #MedialPterygoid #JawTension #TMD #PhysicalTherapy #JawMobility
