There’s only one place in the entire world where you can legally commit almost any crime and get away with it and here’s how. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot get away with murder in international waters because you can be prosecuted by the country of your ship’s origin. Nor in Antarctica, where according to the 1959 Antarctic Treaty criminals are to be tried by their own country. But there is one piece of land on earth where no jurisdiction is claimed by any nation, and that is the 800 square mile chunk of uninhabited desert on the Egypt Sudan border known as Bir Tawil. Because each country claims a border that would give it control over a much larger piece of disputed land to the east the Hala’ib Triangle, the result is that both Egypt and Sudan actively reject sovereignty over Bir Tawil, because claiming sovereignty there would mean they would lose their claim on the much nicer Hala’ib Triangle. The end result is that in theory, you can commit any crime you want in this desert wasteland and avoid arrest in either Egypt or Sudan, because if they prosecuted you they would stand to lose a huge chunk of nice land by admitting sovereignty over this undesirable piece of desert. But unfortunately, if you’re American like me, the United States and several other nations claim extraterritorial jurisdiction over crimes committed by its citizens around the world, meaning I could be arrested if I went back to the US after committing my crimes in Bir Tawil.
