Almost every flight simulator at home is flown with a joystick. That gap has existed for one reason: yokes have always been expensive. Thrustmaster's new TCA Sky Yoke costs around €200, which is a long way below what a yoke normally costs, and it has a lot more in it than that price suggests. Seven axes, 24 action buttons plus a hat switch, a mini stick and two analog triggers, a full 180 degrees of rotation, 9 centimetres of push and pull travel, a built in throttle, a trim wheel and rudder controls. The sensors are magnetic Hall effect rather than potentiometers, so there is nothing in there to wear out and drift. It also does something I did not expect at that price: you can connect two of them to the same PC or console and fly together, one person in each seat. I clamped it to my desk, set it up in Microsoft Flight Simulator and flew it. It is stiff, which is correct, and it genuinely pulls my chair when I haul back on it. It is plastic rather than metal, but the surfaces your hands actually touch are shaped properly, close to a real aircraft yoke. The form factor is tiny for a yoke, so it comes off the desk in seconds when you want your space back. The one real weakness is the throttle, which is a bit small to be precise with. You can run a separate throttle quadrant alongside it, and Thrustmaster has another one on the way. I am keeping it. Mostly I am just glad that yokes are finally affordable.
