Is Your Business Creating Freedom—or Just Giving You a More Demanding Job? A Conversation with Young Han What if the real measure of business success isn’t how much revenue you generate, but whether your business can operate and grow without depending on you for everything? In this episode of Money and You, Michelle talks with entrepreneur, investor, and business operator Young Han, who is on a five-year sprint to own 20 cash-flowing businesses. He currently operates 14 companies, including a fractional CFO and COO firm, Blue Ocean Pool Service, a Blooming Blinds franchise, and Owners Club, a community for small business owners. Young’s long-term vision extends beyond building his own portfolio. Inspired by his father’s experience as an immigrant small-business owner, Young wants to help more people use business ownership as a path into the middle class—and create greater financial stability, opportunity, and freedom for themselves and their families. Young shares the failures, experiments, and career changes that led him to small-business ownership. After attempting to build wealth through approaches including individual stocks, cryptocurrency, real estate, and angel investing, he recognized that his strongest skills were in operating and growing businesses. That realization eventually led him to develop and test an operating system designed specifically for small businesses working toward their first $1 million or $2 million in annual revenue. Getting Comfortable With Being “Good Enough” One of Young’s most interesting observations is that the skills rewarded in corporate life can sometimes make entrepreneurship more difficult. In a corporate role, people often advance by developing deeper expertise in a particular area. An early-stage business owner, however, may need to shift constantly among marketing, sales, operations, hiring, finances, and customer service. Young describes his process as a spiral staircase of “good enoughs.” You establish a workable product, move to marketing, improve sales, address hiring, and then return to each area as the business grows. Over time, those layers can develop into excellence. Why Essential Businesses May Offer Growing Opportunities Young believes trades, home services, manufacturing, and other needed, basic businesses offer meaningful opportunities today. Consumers need reliable painters, plumbers, electricians, pool-service providers, cleaners, gardeners, carpenters, welders, and other skilled workers. In many areas, simply answering the phone, communicating clearly, arriving when promised, and thanking customers can distinguish a company from its competitors. Do You Own a Business—or a Job? Young uses two questions to evaluate true business ownership: Can the business operate without you? Can the business grow without you? If every important decision, sale, customer relationship, or operational task still depends on the owner, that person may have created a highly demanding job with greater risk rather than a transferable business. Young refers to this as the “absence test.” The goal isn’t necessarily to leave the company completely. It is to create the choice to step away—or to participate only in the parts of the business you genuinely enjoy. Owners Club: owners.club Owners Club offers a free community for small-business owners, including networking opportunities, expert-led classes, and live coaching sessions. Young also offers a self-guided course introducing his small-business operating system, individual implementation support, and fractional CFO and COO services for larger companies.
