Start outside. You can count individual bolts on the landing gear. There is real maintenance text printed on the gear doors telling you not to exceed torque values on the fasteners. There is a serial number on the gear strut. You can see the hydraulic cables running up inside the gear bay. And the whole aircraft looks worn and slightly dirty, which is correct, because nobody has built a new 757 since 2004. Now go inside. Over 500 circuit breakers, physically modelled, and the working ones do exactly what they would do in the real aircraft. I pulled one in flight and switched off my own primary flight display, then pushed it back in and watched the screen boot up again. The displays are CRTs, not LCDs, so the pixels are visible and they take a moment to wake. Some instruments are not screens at all, they are mechanical rolling digits that physically turn. The altimeter jumps from negative to positive the instant you dial in the right pressure setting. Even the rubber boot around the flap lever has its own physics and moves when you move the lever. Then there are the systems underneath. A custom Pegasus flight management computer. Over 300 EICAS messages. Three separate flight control computers running the autopilot. Simulated IRS drift. Cabin temperature that responds to how many passengers are on board, whether the doors are open and what the packs are doing. Over 450 individual cockpit sound samples. So I broke it. Engine failure, engine fire, an electrical dropout that killed my screens for a second, and the ram air turbine dropping out of the belly and sounding exactly like the little propeller it is. The 757 is the Ferrari of the skies and it is a lot of pilots' favourite aeroplane, which makes it a dangerous thing to attempt.
