Julius Allen loved growing up Baptist. No church trauma, no bad experience, no reason to leave. So what made a happy Baptist kid from Chicago become a Muslim? On this episode of Neighbors for Change, Matt Brewer and Jessica McDonald sit down with Julius, a husband, dad of three, truck driver, photographer, and proud Chicagoan. In college, a Muslim classmate came to him for help, and the woman in front of him looked nothing like the story the news had been telling about Islam. So he went looking for himself. In 2011, he reverted to Islam. Six months later, his knee shattered while he was running with friends, and doctors found cancer. We talk about the difference between converting and reverting, how five daily prayers work as structure and protection, the purification ritual before prayer (yes, we go there), why women are excused from prayer during their cycle, praying from a chair after multiple knee replacements, God's mercy through hard seasons, his Humans of New York inspired project Daily Muslim Life, assisting photographer Alexi Lubomirski in the fashion world, and how Julius treats his lesbian neighbors he loves. His philosophy for all of it: meet people where they are, and leave the rest between them and God. This week's homework: think of one neighbor whose story you've only heard secondhand, and go hear it from them.
