Leslie Allen has been in advertising, communications and PR for 37 years. She started at one of Nashville's largest ad agencies, worked her way through mid-size agencies in Nashville and Memphis, then went independent in 2010 and built Wildcat Communications into a solo boutique PR firm that serves mid-size companies in the automotive aftermarket and chemical industries, including Hot Shot's Secret, Gold Eagle, GFS Chemicals, and Orbia. In 37 years, she has never once made a cold call. Every client has come through referrals, built on a habit she started on day one of her career: taking the time to actually talk to whoever calls, no matter how junior or unimportant the call might seem. In this conversation: - Why she left agency life to go independent, and how a client's attempt to micromanage her process was the final push - How she's built decades of client relationships in industries she started out knowing nothing about, automotive parts and industrial chemicals included - Why she writes everything herself first and only uses AI to polish a line afterward, after getting burned by a client's AI-generated press releases she had to rewrite from scratch - The event she planned for Cherry Bomb Exhaust: 3,000 people, an $80,000 budget, Blue Öyster Cult playing live, and 300-plus hot rods - 28 Global Automotive Aftermarket Awards for her copywriting over the course of her career - Why she still refuses to cold call, and what she's built instead - Her next move: one or two more retainer clients, and a lot more time at her cabin on Monteagle Mountain.
