James Hylton spent parts of six decades in NASCAR — as a mechanic, a championship-winning crew chief, a Rookie of the Year, and finally as an owner-driver who won at Richmond and Talladega. On April 28, 2018, at age 83, he was killed alongside his 61-year-old son James Hylton Jr., known as Tweety, when the truck they were riding home in from an ARCA race at Talladega Superspeedway left Interstate 85 near Carnesville, Georgia. This is the full story of James Hylton's remarkable NASCAR and ARCA career, his son's decision to leave teaching behind to join him, and the crash that took both their lives on the same day — including what the official Georgia State Patrol investigation actually found, and the NASCAR-ARCA merger announced at Talladega that same morning. From his early years as a mechanic on Rex White's championship Chevrolet and crew chief for Ned Jarrett's title-winning Ford, through his own record rookie season, his 1970 Richmond win, and his signature 1972 Talladega 500 victory, James Hylton was one of NASCAR's most durable independents. Decades later, still fielding a car in the ARCA Racing Series at age 83, he and his son were killed driving home from the very track where he won the biggest race of his career — on the same day NASCAR announced it had formally acquired ARCA. Tributes poured in from Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Darrell Waltrip, and NASCAR itself. A deep dive into NASCAR history, vintage stock car racing, the independent owner-driver era, and one of the sport's quieter modern tragedies — featuring Rex White, Ned Jarrett, Talladega Superspeedway, the ARCA Racing Series, and the story of a father and son racing family. If you're into classic NASCAR, NASCAR history documentaries, or the human stories behind the sport's independents, this one's for you. #NASCAR #NASCARHistory #JamesHylton #Talladega #ARCA #VintageNASCAR #RacingHistory #NASCARTribute
