The Ferrari 296 Speciale - with 880hp track tested on the Anglesey Circuit with this review with Vicki Butler-Henderson, who tests its performance, handling, sound and driver engagement. Is this peak Ferrari, and the ultimate modern driver's Ferrari? In this Ferrari 296 Speciale review, Vicki tests the three things that matter most to her in a driver's car: power, noise and a great chassis, on road and track. It follows special-series Ferraris including the 360 Challenge Stradale, 458 Speciale and 488 Pista. The 296 Speciale is the most powerful rear-wheel-drive full-production Ferrari ever. Its 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 plug-in hybrid makes 880hp for 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of more than 205 mph, and it laps Fiorano faster than any other 296 and LaFerrari, according to Ferrari. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM THE 296 GTB? The Speciale has 50 hp more, weighs 60 kg less and sits 5 mm closer to the Tarmac to reduce cornering roll. Ferrari says it has 20% more downforce and a record power-to-weight ratio for a Ferrari berlinetta of 1.60 kg/cv. Quicker gearshifts and revised ducts bring more V6 sound into the cabin, so much that Vicki asks who needs a stereo. HOW DOES THE HYBRID SYSTEM WORK? The plug-in hybrid charges from a plug or the engine, and gives around 15 miles of electric range at up to 84 mph, though range drops dramatically at that speed. In Qualify mode, the electric motor fills acceleration gaps in the first seven gears of the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. A 13 hp F1-derived boost, also seen on the SF90 XX Stradale, works out the circuit and suggests where to use it: 14 times over two laps of Fiorano, or 15 in one lap of Mugello. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO DRIVE? Gearchanges you can feel make Vicki feel part of the car, and she calls it lightning fast. At Anglesey, the short wheelbase, race-derived suspension and latest dynamic control systems let her push hard, including getting it sideways. A new Medium Downforce setting on the retractable spoiler improves rear-end stability at high speeds. WHEELS AND TYRES This 296 Speciale rides on 20-inch alloys with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. Michelin says they let drivers explore their Ferrari's full potential on track while remaining road legal. The K marking shows Michelin and Ferrari developed the tyre together. DESIGN AND INTERIOR Ferrari design chief Flavio Manzoni gave it visual links to the F80 and 12Cilindri, and customers can add stripes and numbers. Inside, a door panel is made from a single block of carbon fibre. The 296 Speciale A is the convertible version. RIVALS The 296 Speciale costs around £100,000 more than the 296 GTB, and as much as two Porsche 911 GT3 RSs. VICKI'S VERDICT: IS IT REALLY SPECIAL? For Vicki, the answer is yes. It makes her very happy indeed. Her one reservation is its silent electric running in town, where she feels a Ferrari should be heard. She concludes it represents the best of the best of Ferrari's supercars today. Watch the full video to see Vicki drive it hard at Anglesey and find out what happens when it goes sideways.
