The Lockheed YF-12 Oxcart was a Mach 3.2 interceptor designed to destroy high-altitude Soviet bombers before they reached North America. Armed with the AIM-47 Falcon and AN/ASG-18 radar, it launched a missile from 74,000 feet against a target flying just 500 feet above the ground. It could reach approximately 2,070 mph—but the aircraft never entered combat. Its engineering legacy helped shape the famous Blackbird family, including the SR-71, as well as advanced radar, missile, aerodynamic, and thermal-research programs. #YF12 #Blackbird #SR71 #AviationHistory #Mach3 #MilitaryAviation #ColdWar #AircraftEngineering #AirDefense #oxcart
