The Norwegian Constitution, enacted on 17 May 1814, is the second oldest in the world still in force. It establishes a limited monarchy, parliamentary system of government, and independent judiciary which continues to shape Norway's politics. The King, who is now Harald V, has constitutionally executed powers but is controlled by the Council of State under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.
