Ammonia feeds half the world. It powers global shipping and the process used to make it has barely changed in a hundred years, while quietly pumping out two per cent of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Karen Baert decided to fix that. Co-founder and CEO of Ammobia, Karen has built a modular ammonia reactor that operates at 10 times lower pressure and at 150 degrees Celsius lower temperature than conventional technology. The result is up to 50 per cent lower capital cost, production that can sit anywhere, and a pathway to clean ammonia that does not depend on a green premium to work. In this conversation, we get into why cost, not carbon, is the real battlefield in industrial decarbonisation. Why the geography of energy is being redrawn around one molecule. What decentralised ammonia production could mean for food security across Africa and South Asia. And why the people who say clean alternatives can never compete on price are about to be proved wrong, again. Karen trained as a chemical engineer at KU Leuven, took her master's in renewable energy in Berlin, and did her MBA at Stanford. She backed clean energy companies at Breakthrough Energy Ventures before deciding to build one herself. In 2025, she was named Women Scientist of the Year at the Women in Energy Transition Awards. Ammobia closed a $7.5 million seed round in January 2026, backed by Shell Ventures, Air Liquide, MOL Switch and Chevron Technology Ventures. This episode will change how you think about food, fuel, and what the energy transition actually requires.
