But In most states, you can use non-deadly force to defend your property. If the thief or vandal threatens you with serious harm, you can escalate to deadly force. So, you can end up using deadly force, but you have to start with nondeadly force first, which increases your risk. Some states let you use deadly force immediately if you believe nondeadly force would be too dangerous from the start. So, generally, you can't use deadly force to protect property. But there are exceptions, especially when the situation escalates or involves serious crimes. You have to Know your state’s laws and stay informed. Most people never take the time to learn their state laws on self-defense, and they should because not only are they more or less different in every state, but sometimes they change, and ignorance of the law is not an exception in court.
